Travelling Tips for the Disabled

Unlike in the past, today people with disabilities have been recognized, and are less discriminated against. In many countries there are legislations that protect them and make their life a little easier. Also many public buildings have been designed or renovated in order to accommodate people with disabilities.

With all these improvements, people with disabilities are now able to travel for vacation or a business trip to places far away from their home. However, with all these improvements we have made, travelling for people with disabilities is still a challenge for them, especially when they are travelling alone or, they are travelling to an unknown destination. Below is a guide to help people with all forms of disabilities to travel safely.

1. Plan well in advance
Planning is key to any form of success. This is very important because it reduces chances of getting stranded and being inconvenienced. Booking flights and hotel rooms are the top priorities, however if you are going to stay at a friend’s or a relative’s house; notifying them in advance is very important. Then they can be prepared and even pick you up from the airport.

2. Book hotels that are disabled friendly
Hotels with disabled friendly structures are very convenient as they allow disabled individuals to move freely with minimal effort. Most of these hotels also have special emergency protocols that ensure disabled individuals are not left behind in case of an emergency, unlike some hotels where these issues are over looked.

3. Use a travel agent that offers travel packages for disabled travelers
Booking flights and hotel rooms with travel agents that offer travel solutions to disabled people is advantageous in a number of ways. They ensure they book for their disabled clients airlines and hotels that are disabled friendly. They strive to offer services and suggestions that will ensure their clients travel comfortably.

4. Understand and know your rights when at the airport
Travelling, for people with disabilities, is very hectic, especially when they arrive at the airport. They face the challenge of getting proper information and directions. This is further aggravated by the huge number of people traveling and long queues. In airports, there are attendants that are supposed to attend to the needs of those travelling with disabilities.

Disabled travelers should not, and are not, treated differently when they go through security measures. They are also protected from any form of discrimination from any airline. Disabled travelers are advised to be very conversant with their rights to avoid and report any form of discrimination when travelling.

5. Bring extra medication
There is no harm in carrying an extra dose of medication when travelling. People do lose their luggage as they travel so, having an extra dose will act as a backup when one dose gets lost. This also ensures that when travelling, a disabled person does not run out of their medicine forcing them to start looking for a drug store when travelling. These medications should be stored properly to ensure their safety.

6. Take a doctor’s note and contact information when travelling
A doctor’s note contains important information about a condition that a disabled person is facing and this will help doctors save a lot of time on tests in case of an emergency. Contact information for your doctor allows other doctors to get important information from your doctor should the need arise. This small, but vital, information can save lives.

7. Use direct flights
It is very hectic and tiresome for a disabled traveler to use connecting flights. Using connecting flights exposes them to loss of their luggage and even injury as they get in and out of a plane. Using a direct flight cuts all these risks down and saves a lot time and energy when travelling. Direct flights also ensure that those travelling with disabilities are not stranded in an airport as they wait for a connecting flight.

8. Disabled travelers are advised to have some knowledge about where they are travelling to
There is nothing more difficult than looking for directions to a place you do not know about. This is even harder for disabled travelers so, it is advisable to have at least some knowledge and understanding about their destination. This will give them an upper hand when moving around and the knowledge to know where to go and where not to go. This will be very helpful when they are stranded or experience an emergency situation and need urgent assistance.

9. Carry the appropriate luggage
Disabled travelers are advised to carry luggage that they can manage when they are travelling. Unless they have company, travelling with a huge amount of luggage is not easy. Traveling lightly enables disabled travelers to be more flexible to situations that arise besides, a large amount of luggage can also easily get lost.

10. Enjoy travelling
Many disabled people do not travel often because of a lot of limitations which discourages them. However modern technology ensures safe travel for all regardless of their condition. Travelling should be enjoyed by all since it is a chance to experience new things that are different than what they are used to.

The Meaning of the Sphinx

Travelers and tourists are always baffled on the meaning and significance of the sphinx that is found in front of the Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. They are marveled that the Sphinx is an enigmatic statue with a Lion’s paws, Eagle’s wings, Human face and a Bull’s body. This has become a source of academic discuss over what it all means and what it does not. Today, I am to attempt to discuss the issue of the Sphinx and what it stands for.

There are two versions of what the sphinx is all about. The first version is the Egyptian version, which, dates back to the time of the building of the pyramid of Giza. This I indicated how it was built in the article on The Pyramid Of Giza and End Tim prophecies. The second version of the story is the story of the sphinx and the riddle. The story goes that a sphinx appears to a town and gives them a riddle: What is it that walks with four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon and three in the evening? Anyone who did not answer the riddle is killed, until Oedipus was able to answer the question. The Sphinx, Confused, threw itself over the cliff and died.

The Sphinx in this sense is simply representing thought forms that has been created by human beings that result in strong ties of propensities. Pondering on such propensities result in a viscous cycle, where, like a head with several snakes as its hairs, the more you remove the hairs the more they grow back. Hence no progress is ever made in the issue of redemption from the vice. At the time when people can still see thought forms, many clairvoyants regards some of these forms as gods and elevate them to that level. But this particular form has a lot to do with womanhood and motherhood.

The second one, the Egyptian one, is actually the representative in stone of the four living creatures mentioned in the bible book of Revelations, which comprises of the Eagle, the Lion, The Ram with Human Countenance, and the Bull. All these are represented also in the signs of the Zodiac in Leo, Aries, Taurus. The Eagle is represented by the Scorpio, which in earlier Zodiac signs used to be represented as the Eagle.

This is the representation in symbolic forms of the Living creatures, who are the pillars of creation, through whose radiations creation came to be and exist. It is the Holy Spirit, he who is seated on the Throne, that passes his creative radiations through these creatures.

Marrowstone Point Light and the “Triangle of Fire”

About October 1 1888 a lens lantern with a red light was mounted on a pole to mark the eastern entrance to Port Townsend Bay. In 1892 the Lighthouse board recommended a large fog bell be installed to warn of the sharp turn in the course when entering for leaving Puget Sound. $3,500 was allocated by Congress on March 3 1893 and a one and one half story six-room keepers house with a fog bell tower was built and put into operation on April 7, 1896. The huge 1,200 pound bell would strike twice every fifteen seconds during periods of fog or low visibility.

Seventy-year-old former sea captain Osmore H Morgan was the first keeper. He had spent the prior fourteen years as head keeper at the New Dungeness Lighthouse. His daughter, Nettie Race took over after his passing in 1907. A few months later Axel Rustad was appointed keeper and he and wife Karen took over. They stayed for ten years raising four sons in the keepers quarters. The only water for the family was rain water collected and stored in a 5,000-gallon redwood tank which was located in a shed behind the house.

In July 1903 the North Pacific, a side wheel steamer struck Craven Rock off Marrowstone Point in a dense fog. The steamer had 14 passengers aboard who were taken to shore by lifeboats and the tug boat C. B. Smith. Lighthouse keeper Morgan fed and sheltered them until they were taken aboard the steamer Mainlander which had run aground on Marrowstone Point that same morning but was afloat again at high tide. The North Pacific was a total loss as it sank in deep water.

In 1907 construction of Fort Flagler was completed. Fort Flagler joined with the guns at Fort Casey on Admiralty Head and the guns at Fort Worden near Point Wilson to form a “Triangle of Fire” to prevent enemy vessels from entering Puget Sound

Dense fog caused another mishap in August 1908. The 502-foot-long armored cruiser USS Colorado ran aground on Liplip Point the southeast tip of Marrowstone Island. This incident cast light on the need for more navigational aids in Puget Sound. On October 22, 1913 Congress appropriated $30,000 for improvements.

Marrowstone Point received a new fog signal and light in 1914. An experimental acetylene gun was installed in a wooden building thirteen yards northeast of the bell tower and took the place of the fog bell. Mariners were asked to report the efficiency of the gun to the lighthouse inspector in Portland.

A new acetylene gun was installed atop a concrete structure just two months later. At the same time, the light was changed from a fixed red to a quick two red flashes every six seconds. The acetylene fog gun was the first of its kind to be used in the United States.

Several improvements were made over the years until 1962 when it was automated. In 1972 the Coast Guard transferred the property to the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to be used as a research facility. The keepers house is now used as a guest house for scientists who visit the Marrowstone Marine Field Station.

Still standing at the waters edge are the structure that held the light and fog signal and the light tower. The flashing white light is still functioning but the fog signal is no longer being used. The station is now being used as a marine ecosystem health and marine fish health research facility.

Fort Flagler is now Fort Flagler State Park. A military museum is located in the park. The Marrowstone Point Light is visible from the park’s beach but it is not open to the public.

The Hurdles Of Travelling Out Of The Country

Travelling out of the country seems to be fun and exciting. However, the hurdles that accompanied our thrill is unexpected. It starts with the Immigration at the airport and the Embassy where we are scrutinized thoroughly for the purpose of our visit to a certain country.

With my experience, I was almost left in the Immigration. I was held in the Embassy for almost 2 hours. They were very critical when it comes to tourists. But I do understand their protocol especially those who leaving and entering the country. Imagine the show money should be a maximum of US$ 10,000. Better that my purpose was research. But still all the files of my laptop were scanned as well as the Facebook messages and my emails. The good thing that happened was that from being suspicious, they become impressed with my work because I was able to make studies outside the country even if I was not able to visit them physically. I was really afraid to be left in the airport because I have spent much for this travel. My God, I did not sleep for 3 nights because of my immediate need for money to cover my round trip air fare, hotel accommodation and food not to mention to buy enough amount of US dollars in my pocket as a show money in case the Embassy will question my capacity to sustain my stay in Malaysia.

But after going through a lot in the Immigration, I was very happy because I can now go anywhere in the world as a researcher and a writer with no hassles at all. I was able to prove my credibility and identity to them that nothing is impossible if you put your mind into what you are doing.

Just never think that when you go out of the country, it makes you a nobody. You have a very important contribution to make a change especially in the lives of the significant people around you. Lots of people become successful because they are able to overcome all the odds on their way to achieving their dreams. Accept and adapt change! There is no sense in spending your days talking about who you used to be. It will only prevent you from creating a successful and meaningful life.

If you spend too much on talking about your ideas, gathering information, reading, researching, attending seminars, and listening to what everyone else is saying and not putting into action all that learning and knowledge to make your life happen, you are bound to fail.

When you are determined to do what you want, no one can stop you. It’s a matter of having self-confidence, perseverance and hard work.

Never hold yourself back, put worthwhile goals into action. Walk the talk and apply all the learning and knowledge you have to make things happen and make a difference in your life.

I Went To Sweden For A Few Days

At the end of March, I ended up going to Stockholm, Sweden for a few days and this was somewhere where I had never been before. As a result of this, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.

Having said that, what I did know is that it was going to be fairly cold and that it was supposed to be expensive there. One of the reasons why I went there was to see a friend of mine called, Peter.

On The Ground

Once I arrived, I came to see how cold it really was, but what made it easier to handle was that it wasn’t very windy. I hadn’t slept the night before as the flight was very early and this meant that I felt like a zombie when I got there.

Part of me wanted to explore the city and another part of me wanted to sleep, yet I knew that if I didn’t have an early night I would be tired for the rest of the trip. So, I ended up going to bed early and waking up early the next day.

A Moment of Inspiration

When I was walking around the city the next day, I thought it would be a good idea for me to do a bit of filming. I thought that I could then share where I had been with my friends and the people who view my work online.

After this, I ended up looking around the houses of parliament, the palace, and the old town, among other things. I had arranged to meet my friend towards the end of the day, so I was looking forward to see him again after so many years had passed.

A Different Culture

While I was at my friends place, his wife spoke about some of the things that are different about Sweden. Firstly, she said that people are generally not big on eye contact, and that looking at people can be seen as being rude.

In addition to this, she said that people are more introverted there and that it was very different to America in this regard. When I went shopping with Peter for food, the prices didn’t seem very different to what things cost in a supermarket in England.

Pros and Cons

One thing that Sweden does have is high quality drinking water, and this is partly due to the fact that there are so many lakes there. The downside is that income tax is very high, but I guess that a lot of people believe that they get a lot in return.

At the end of my time there, I met a woman who said some interesting things about what it is like when it comes to dating in Sweden. She said that women were the ones who did the pursuing in bars or clubs, not men.

My Thoughts

I’m not sure how true this is as I didn’t speak to anyone else about this and I didn’t go out in the evening while I was there. A lot of the women did seem to be fairly masculine, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was something that took place in these kinds of environments.

As for what was said about eye contact, I would say that it was no different to what it is like in England. Some people are comfortable with eye contact, while some people are not comfortable with it.

An Enjoyable Trip

Overall I had a good time there and I would be happy to go there again as soon as it gets a bit warmer. A lot has been said about the crime in Sweden, but Stockholm seemed to be fine.

If you like old buildings, boat trips, finding out about what took place in the past and you don’t mind the cold, there is the chance that you would enjoy Stockholm.

I Wanted To Embrace The Swedish Culture

Once I knew that I would be going to Sweden, Stockholm, I started to think about what it would be like. Going away didn’t consume my mind, though, as I was engaged with what was taking place in my life.

I wanted to go away, no doubt about it; but I wasn’t in a position where I needed to get away. What I was doing was fulfilling and this stopped me from getting too caught up in what I would be doing whilst I was away.

A Different Climate

What was different about this trip was that I would be going somewhere that was cold, and this made a change. In the past, I had generally gone to countries that were warm and were only a few hours away.

Yet, even though I was going somewhere cold and it would only take a few hours to get there, I thought that it would be unlike anywhere I had been before. So, when the time came for me to go away, I started to get excited.

The First Signs

On the plane, the safety video was in English and then it was followed up in Norwegian, due to the airline that I was flying with. But even though I wasn’t going Norway, this made it even clearer that I was going away.

Soon after this, I landed in Stockholm and when I got off the plane, heard people talking in another language. It wasn’t until I got outside and was exposed to the cold temperature that I fully realised that I was in another country.

Extremely Curious

It was incredibly cold and, as I didn’t go to sleep the night before, I just wanted to go to sleep. Nevertheless, now that I was away I wanted to find out more about Sweden and to experience their way of life.

One Moment

While I was walking around the city, I saw an advertisement that spoke about where I could find tapas to eat. Now, I have tried taps in the past and I enjoyed eating them, but I wasn’t in Sweden to eat tapas.

Similarly, I didn’t go to there to eat McDonald’s or to have a coffee at Starbucks; I was there to experience the Swedish way of life. I thought about how there is a fine line between adding things to a culture and enriching it, and adding things and completely destroying a culture.

No Different

When it come to the main shopping area, for instance, I could have been anywhere in the world; it was no different to being in London or Australia. The same could be said for the hotel that I stayed in.

After I started to walk around the old town I could see that I was somewhere different. This was a special place, and what helped was that I was with a friend from Sweden who could show me around.

A Wonderful Time

Seeing these buildings and finding out about the history of Stockholm, Sweden was thoroughly enjoyable. I even had the chance to write on the wall of a coffee shop – whoever goes there can leave a message or just write their name on the wall.

I wanted to see the Viking burial ground and the 17-century ship, but I didn’t have time in the end. There is plenty to see and do here if you are looking for somewhere different to explore.
